Your bright smile will last for years to come with proper oral care and regular touch-ups from Dr. Larsen at Parkside Dental.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening works by using a special category of compounds called peroxides. Peroxides such as hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are partially composed of very volatile oxygen molecules. When these molecules contact a tooth stain on your enamel, they react by breaking the chemical bond that holds the stain onto your enamel. This essentially bleaches the stain away and leaves you with a brighter smile.

What can I expect from in-office whitening?

In-office whitening is done by Dr. Larsen at our office in Murphy, TX. He will clean your teeth, protect the gums with a special barrier, and paint a whitening solution onto your enamel. Then, he will activate the solution with a special UV light, then rinse the solution away. This process may be repeated a few times.

In-office whitening is very fast and can whiten your teeth up to 5 shades or more in a single appointment. It’s a good option if you need results for a fast-approaching event or a special occasion, like a wedding or photoshoot.

What can I expect from take-home whitening?

Take-home whitening is done with a set of custom trays. Dr. Larsen will take dental impressions of your teeth, then work with a dental lab to build a set of trays that will fit onto your teeth perfectly. Once these arrive at our office, you’ll be able to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, which usually takes 2-3 weeks.

Your results will be more subtle and gradual than in-office whitening, but you will still end up with identical results, compared to in-office whitening. If you’d like to spend less time in the dentist’s chair, take-home whitening may be right for you.

How long will my treatment last?

Depending on how well you care for your teeth, your results could last anywhere from between 1-3 years. You should continue to brush and floss regularly, and see Dr. Larsen for checkups every six months.

There are a few ways to prolong the effects of your treatment. First, using a peroxide-based toothpaste and mouthwash can help prevent the buildup of surface stains and keep your teeth clean. It’s also important to quit smoking or using tobacco and consider minimizing your consumption of staining beverages like wine, coffee, and tea. In addition, drinking these beverages with a straw prevents contact with the teeth, which will help keep your teeth white for a longer period of time.
