We offer both nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation and oral conscious sedation at Parkside Dental.

Sedation can help you stay more comfortable while you’re getting treatment from Dr. Jason Larsen.

We can offer sedation for any appointment at our office, from major dental surgery to routine teeth cleanings and oral exams.

Patients of all ages can use sedation to help overcome fear and anxiety at the dentist’s office and get the treatment they need.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

Wondering why you may need sedation dentistry in Murphy, TX? Choosing to be sedated during your dental appointment has a variety of different benefits.

First, you’ll feel more comfortable during your procedure. Whether you have dental anxiety or you just don’t like going to the dentist, sedation makes it easier to get through your appointment without feeling uncomfortable.

You also won’t have to worry about pain and discomfort. Combined with numbing, treatments like nitrous oxide sedation and oral conscious sedation can help mitigate pain and discomfort, even if you have a very low pain tolerance.

Sedation dentistry is completely safe, too. Both nitrous oxide sedation and oral conscious sedation have minimal side effects, and are typically appropriate for just about any patient. However, you will need to consult with Dr. Larsen to discuss your medical history, medications you’re taking, and other such information. This helps us make sure that sedation is right for you.

What is nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation?

Nitrous oxide sedation, which is also called “minimal inhaled sedation” is a sedation method that uses nitrous oxide (laughing gas) that is pumped through a nose mask. You’ll simply breathe deeply through your nose when instructed by Dr. Larsen, and the gas will immediately be absorbed into your lungs and bloodstream.

Laughing gas sedation makes you feel “floaty” and a bit disconnected from what’s happening around you. It also helps eliminate pain and discomfort, and reduces feelings of nervousness and anxiety, allowing you to feel safe and comfortable at the dentist’s office.

Best of all, this method of sedation wears off about 5 minutes after the flow of gas stops, and has few side effects beyond headaches, nausea, and confusion. You can drive yourself home and quickly get back to your day-to-day routine.

What is oral conscious sedation?

Oral conscious sedation uses a pill-based sedative that’s taken an hour or two before your appointment. This sedative will make you feel very relaxed and groggy, and it’s fairly common for patients to fall asleep, or not remember what happened during their procedure. However, you will remain fully conscious and responsive to commands, and you can be woken up if you fall asleep.

This is a deeper method of sedation compared to nitrous oxide sedation, so it’s a good option if you are undergoing a more invasive procedure, such as tooth extraction or the placement of a dental implant.
However, it takes 4-6 hours or longer for the sedative to wear off completely. You will need to have someone come with you to Parkside Dental to drive you home and take care of you until the side effects of oral conscious sedation wear off.
