What Is A Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a restorative dental treatment used to protect a decayed tooth and eliminate a cavity. Cavities form when bacteria feed on sugar and food in the mouth, reproduce, and excrete acid that “demineralizes” the tooth.

Over time, this results in a hole, or “cavity.” When left untreated, this can result in an infection of the inside of the tooth, which is a very serious dental emergency.

Fillings are used to replace the missing enamel and restore the appearance and function of the tooth. At our office, we primarily use composite fillings, which are made from a blend of crushed glass and durable dental resin.

This material is applied to your tooth after it has been prepared, and it’s shaped and hardened by Dr. Larsen to cover up the cavity and restore the natural appearance of your tooth. The result is a tooth that’s just as strong and durable as a real tooth.

The decayed enamel will be completely eliminated, and as long as you take good care of your mouth, it’s unlikely that the area will become decayed again in the future.

Does It Hurt To Get A Filling?

No. Getting a filling does not hurt at all at Parkside Dentistry. Before your treatment begins, Dr. Larsen will spray the treatment area with a numbing spray, and then use a needle to numb the gum and nerves below your decayed tooth. After a few minutes, you won’t feel anything in the area, and he will begin preparing your tooth.

The tooth will be prepared by trimming away damaged enamel, and cleaning the area. Then, Dr. Larsen will apply the tooth-colored composite material layer-by-layer, adjusting and hardening each layer as he goes.

Once the overall shape of the filling looks good, Dr. Larsen will make final adjustments to make sure it fits your bite, and then you’ll be sent home. Your tooth may feel slightly tender for a day or two, but you should feel no serious pain or discomfort. You should contact us for a follow-up if you experience any significant pain after treatment, as this is not normal.

How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?

Depending on its location, how well it was placed, and how well you care for your teeth, a filling can last anywhere from 7-20 years, with a lifespan of about 10 years being the most common for composite fillings.

This is one reason why it’s important to see a dentist for regular six-month appointments. Dr. Larsen can examine your mouth and your fillings, and make sure that they are in great shape. Over time, they may begin to fail, which can result in further decay.

Frequent appointments and good at-home oral care ensures that Dr. Larsen can replace and repair failing fillings, which keeps your smile healthy and strong.
