At What Age Do I Get Braces For My Child?

Posted on 10/1/2024 by Parkside Dental
Young person with braces smiling. As a parent, you want the best for your child, including a healthy and beautiful smile. If you've noticed your child's teeth are crowded, crooked, or have gaps, you might be wondering whether they need braces. While every child is different, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial evaluation around age 7.

Why Age 7?

By age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, allowing the dentist to assess jaw growth, bite development, and potential problems. Early intervention can prevent more serious issues from developing and simplify future treatment.

What to Expect at the Initial Evaluation

During the initial evaluation, the dentist will:

•  Examine your child's teeth and bite.
•  Take X-rays to evaluate jaw growth and tooth development.
•  Discuss your child's oral hygiene habits.
•  Talk to you about your concerns and expectations.

Based on this evaluation, the dentist will determine if your child needs braces and, if so, when the best time to start treatment would be.

Signs Your Child May Need Braces

Even before the age of 7, there are some signs that may indicate your child needs braces. These include:

•  Crowded or overlapping teeth
•  Teeth that don't meet properly when biting
•  Difficulty chewing or speaking
•  Protruding teeth
•  Thumb sucking or other oral habits

If you notice any of these signs, schedule an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible.

Benefits of Early Treatment

Starting treatment early can offer several benefits, including:

•  Guiding jaw growth and preventing future problems
•  Improving the alignment of teeth for better oral hygiene
•  Correcting bite problems that can affect chewing and speech
•  Boosting your child's self-esteem by improving their smile

What If My Child Doesn't Need Braces at Age 7?

Even if your child doesn't need braces right away, the dentist will likely recommend regular checkups to monitor their dental development. This allows for early intervention if any problems arise in the future.

Remember...

Every child is unique, and the best time for braces will vary depending on individual needs. Early evaluation by a dentist can help ensure your child receives the right treatment at the right time for a healthy and beautiful smile.
