What Is Thrush? Should I Worry About It?

If you have looked at your tongue first thing in the morning and have been surprised to see a creamy white tongue instead of a pink tongue, you may be experiencing thrush. Here is some information about thrush.

About Candida

Thrush is a fungal infection that can occur in multiple areas of the body. In fact, your body already contains candida; it can be found in small amounts on your skin, in your intestines, and in your mouth. A small amount of candida is not harmful. However, if you have thrush, you have too much candida in your body.

If you have thrush, you are most likely to see it on your tongue or on the inside of your cheek. Thrush looks like milk or cottage cheese. However, if you try scraping the thrush off your tongue, it will cause your tongue to bleed. Thrush is not generally harmful, but it can cause mouth irritation and bacterial infections, which you will not want.

Who Gets Thrush?

Thrush can happen to anyone, but there are some people who are more susceptible than others. For example, babies are susceptible to thrush because their immune systems are not developed yet. Older adults, especially adults who wear dentures, are also more likely to get thrush. Adults who take certain prescription medications, such as steroid inhalers for asthma, bronchitis, or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder), are also at risk of developing thrush.
