A dental crown can restore a tooth that has been weakened, fractured, significantly decayed, or otherwise needs full-coverage protection. At Parkside Dental, CEREC technology allows us to provide certain dental crowns using a digital chairside workflow rather than sending every crown to an outside laboratory. What Are the Benefits of Same-Day Crowns?One of the primary advantages of a same-day crown is convenience. When a tooth and restoration are appropriate for the CEREC workflow, the tooth can be prepared, digitally scanned, and restored without requiring a separate laboratory fabrication period. Because the restoration is created during the same visit, patients can also avoid wearing a temporary crown between appointments. Digital scanning is used to capture the information needed to design the restoration, eliminating the need for a conventional impression for that CEREC case. Same-day treatment is not automatically the best approach for every tooth. Our dentists will evaluate the condition and location of the tooth, your bite, the amount of remaining tooth structure, and the restorative material needed before recommending a CEREC crown. What's the Difference Between a Lab-Made and Same-Day Crown?Both laboratory-made and same-day crowns are designed to restore and protect damaged teeth, but the way they are produced differs. A traditional laboratory crown is designed from an impression or digital scan and fabricated outside the dental office. A temporary crown may be worn while the final restoration is being completed, followed by another appointment for placement. A CEREC crown uses a chairside digital workflow. After the tooth is prepared and scanned, the restoration is designed digitally and manufactured in the dental office using CAD/CAM technology. The appropriate workflow and restorative material depend on the individual tooth and treatment needs. What's the Process for Receiving a Same-Day Dental Crown?First, Dr. Jason Larsen or Dr. Jean Larsen will examine the tooth and determine whether a dental crown is appropriate and whether the case is suitable for same-day treatment. The treatment area is numbed as appropriate, and damaged or weakened tooth structure is addressed before the tooth is shaped to receive the crown. A handheld digital scanner is then used to capture the prepared tooth and surrounding bite. This information is used within the CEREC system to design the restoration. The crown is manufactured in the office, checked for fit, bite, and appearance, and then bonded or cemented to the prepared tooth when it meets the requirements of the treatment plan. What Technology Makes Same-Day Crowns Possible?CEREC is a chairside CAD/CAM system that combines digital scanning, computer-assisted restoration design, and in-office manufacturing. This workflow makes it possible to complete certain crowns and other appropriate restorations without sending the case to an outside dental laboratory.
